“Maya (3) still remembered all the signs we showed her several days later. Even the signs, like bird, that we’d forgotten!” — Owen, father
Where is the Bird? is a buggy book designed to go wherever you go. It combines imaginative illustrations by Jasmine Thompson that ‘wake up’ into colourful 3D animations, and present videos demonstrations of British Sign Language (BSL) signs when used with the free Baby BSL smartphone app.
Baby sign language is a recognised support for both deaf and hearing families
to communicate with pre-verbal children. Babies are able to communicate long before they develop the skills necessary for speech and this barrier can lead to frustrations for parents and is a potential cause of The Terrible Two’s. Researchers believe that early gesture and signs are a key part of language development, and that they are vital for early interaction with both deaf and hearing babies.
Where is the Bird? has been developed alongside the deaf community, with guidance from the Deaf Studies Trust,
VS1 Productions and with children from the Elmfield School for the Deaf. It is a beautifully illustrated book that aims to introduces you to the world of BSL through play. Enjoy a walk in the park and discover this language — A bird, a plane — what will you find?
